Therefore, the general approach to anomaly detection in the Earth’s magnetic field is to run the magnetometer parallel to the Earth’s isogonics and note any perturbations. The Earth’s magnetic field varies in intensity from approximately 25,000 nT at the magnetic equator to approximately 70,000 nT at the magnetic poles with the lines of equal intensity (termed “isogonics”) running generally parallel to the equator. The reader will notice in Figure 18.17 that the magnetic field of the Earth is very nonhomogeneous. An older convention for geomagnetic intensity is the gamma (symbol γ) with 1 γ=1 nT. The SI unit for magnetic flux density is the Tesla (symbol T) with the commonly accepted unit for geophysical application as the nanotesla (symbol nT). Magnetic field intensity is measured in quantitative units based upon the flux intensity. Since the application for ROV-mounted magnetometers and gradiometers is typically to determine the location of ferrous metal objects, the principles of Earth magnetism with regard to ferrous metal detection will be examined. Since the Earth’s magnetic field is (by far) the predominant magnet on Earth, magnetometers are generally used to search for anomalies in that field for various purposes. Magnetometers sense values of magnetism (vector and intensity). The two most commonly used subsea search-type magnetometers, used for sensing magnetic anomalies in the Earth’s magnetic field, include the Proton Precession Magnetometer (PPM) and the Optically Pumped Alkali Vapor Magnetometer (OPM) (both of which will be covered below). Since that time, many differing techniques have evolved for sensing static magnetic fields. The magnetometer was first described by Carl Friedrich Gauss in the 1830s. While the previous two types of magnetic field sensors sensed varying magnetism, the magnetometer is used for detection of static magnetic fields. Weaker magnetic field strength is impractical for a chemical shift, spectroscopy, and functional brain imaging. ![]() However the magnetic field strength is relatively weak (0.064 T–0.4 T) and the units are relatively heavy (up to 80 tons) which makes it harder to replace these units. Low power consumption, lower operating costs, and cheaper initial purchase prices are the advantages of these magnets. Unless the room temperature is changed the magnetic field is uniform enough for MRI scans. The two poles of this C-shaped bar are parallel and close to each other. Please note that if your order ships in multiple boxes, package components may not all be in the same box. ![]() The package item number is also listed at the bottom of your packing slip for reference. On your packing slip, package components are picked and packed individually and are identified with the code "PKGCMP" in the price column. ![]() Any backordered components will ship separately as they become available. In-stock components will ship according to our normal shipping time. When you order a package, you are charged one price for all package items. Because most package items or components are also sold separately and may be components of multiple packages, these items may not have the same inventory availability at any point in time. Although packages are sets, items are not physically bundled together. Any item sold as a package on our website is identified by a unique alpha-numeric item number (such as "APH1AB"). A listing of individual items that make up a package is provided on the package item's product detail page along with real-time item availability of those items. A "package" is made up of two or more items sold as a set, often for a reduced price. ![]()
